Historic British pubs in Oxford

"The Four Candles - JD Wetherspoon" in Oxford, England, is a classic example of the popular British pub chain J.D. Wetherspoon, known for its affordable food and drinks as well as its unique locations. This pub is situated in a striking building with a rich history: it is located near the History Faculty of the University of Oxford, which was formerly the High School for Boys. Here, the famous British comedian Ronnie Barker attended school, who later became known as part of the duo "The Two Ronnies." The pub's name is a tribute to Barker's iconic sketch "Four Candles," which centers around a humorous misunderstanding between "four candles" and "fork handles." This connection to local history adds a special touch to the place.

Delicious pub food in England

The atmosphere at the Four Candles is typical of Wetherspoon pubs: lively, straightforward, and welcoming, with a mix of traditional pub charm and modern comfort. The interior spans two levels and offers a generous layout that includes both cozy corners and space for larger groups. The decor is functional yet appealing, featuring elements that reflect the history of the building, with an open, friendly design that still captures the bustle of a city center. It is a place suitable for various occasions – from a quick lunch to an after-work drink or a gathering with friends.

Traditional pub experience in Oxford

The menu offers a wide range of British classics and internationally inspired dishes, reinforcing Wetherspoon's reputation as a provider of reliable pub food. Particularly popular is the "Fish and Chips," a crispy fried fish served with thick chips and mushy peas, perfectly representing traditional British cuisine. The "Steak and Kidney Pudding" is also highly favored, a hearty dish with tender filling and a creamy sauce that conveys warmth and comfort. For those preferring something lighter, the "Grilled Chicken Salad" provides a fresh alternative with crunchy vegetables and a spicy kick. The kitchen emphasizes generous portions and simple, flavorful preparation that satisfies hunger without straining the wallet too much.

Wetherspoon pubs with local charm

The drink selection is another hallmark of the Four Candles. With a variety of Real Ales that regularly rotate, the pub appeals to beer lovers – often featuring local varieties like "Oxfordshire Ales," establishing a connection to the region. In addition to beers, there is a wide range of craft beers, lagers, and spirits, as well as non-alcoholic options that round out the offerings. Notably, the opportunity to participate in seasonal beer festivals showcases a selection of special brews – a treat for those looking to discover new flavors.

Service is quick and friendly, with the staff focused on providing guests with a pleasant experience, despite often high visitor numbers. The open kitchen and the ability to order via an app make the process efficient and modern. The pub operates on a walk-in concept, which underscores its spontaneous, uncomplicated nature, although it can get busier on lively days like weekends or during the festival season. Family-friendliness is also a plus, with a relaxed atmosphere and options for children.

Tom, We don't do cashback, every other spoons does. Absolutely dismissed me like an idiot. Very poor attitude.

Sin más, cadena de restaurante/bar del Reino Unido. Si quieres comer "medianamente" con una buena pinta por poco dinero, este es tu sitio. No busques calidad en la comida, es aceptable para cualquier bolsillo, sin más.

Best wetherspoons in Oxford. Balcony seating area tastefully decorated. Usual wetherspoons good value and service.

Our pizzas were overcooked - the margarita was almost burned. My spicy chicken had almost no chicken and was drowned in hot sauce. Not the best pizza we've had in Spoons, by a mile.

Mediocre no real atmosphere just loads of blokes drinking after work. New build spoons so nothing memorable apart from the name.

Good place, but at Christmas time, I went twice, and they had no Turkey. They told me they can't get delivery. Apart from that food is fantastic 😋

The lovely Amanda who works here is possibly the nicest worker at any spoons I’ve ever met. So lovely. Great accent too.

The place is nice and the food is nice enough usually but I feel I had to say about this burger today because this is what was advertised vs what I got. It was okay but not even close to the photo. I'll still come back as I want to make clear they do other tasty food. Just maybe don't order this burger.
